Update May 11, 2023:
We have grown to know Damsel so much more now. She is absolutely thriving in her foster home with another dog to play and romp with, learn from and gain conficence from. She adores her fenced in backyard where you'll get hours of enjoyment watching her sniff, run, play, and nap. Damsel loves meeting new dogs and people. She's got long legs for a puppy! She weighs about 20 pounds now. Damsel eats three meals a day as most puppies do. Like most puppies she's learning when it's ok to bark. She is fed in her crate, which we highly recommend and now she sits and waits in the crate for her food to arrive and her bowl is down. She's making great progress with house training. She walks to the door and sits or stares when she needs to go out for potty. It's been several days since she's had an accident. It helps that she goes outside often. Like a typical puppy, she is trying to chew on sticks and bark when she's outside so the foster family has lots of chew toys for her. She's really smart and loves positive affirmations! She also loves trailing you inside and outside. She wants to be with her people. She'll need continued leash training and would be best if you used a secure harness for her walks. If you have a really social dog that won't mind puppy energy, a fenced yard and someone home most of the time - let us know if she's a possible good fit for you.
Update April 15:
Damsel is goofy, playful, and curious!! She has lots of energy and loves to be outside exploring (or digging a hole ☹). She likes to chew the bark mulch. She usually will have a stash of sticks, leaves or bark to carry back inside with her. She likes to play with squeaky toys, (prefers the softer ones) and chasing squeaky tennis balls.
With all her energy, Damsel would be better with a fenced yard. She's so goofy and trips and rolls when she runs. Her legs have gotten so long so quick that she must still be learning what to do with them. She loves my small dog and wants to run and play all the time with her (the feeling is not always mutual, and she lets Damsel know it). She’s friendly with the cat and is determined to get him to play with her as well. When playing is over she will curl up next to you on the sofa or in her bed and take a nap. She’s still a chewer, so she needs a toy to gnaw on or it’ll be your fingers!
She gets loud when playing or when she wants something. We’re working on being patient and less vocal especially when her meals are being prepared. She eats her 3 meals a day in her crate. She sleeps in the crate at night with the door open to the attached x-pen with pee pads down to avoid accidents inside the crate. (We hope to get her down to sleeping just in the crate at night.) She’s quiet in the crate (after a few minutes) when we leave the house but will bark when she’s left downstairs or back yard by herself. She likes to be near you all the time. She was the most independent of the 5 puppies, so that may get better once she’s settles in again.
Damsel is doing well with housetraining and leash walking. We’re continuing to work on both. She’s young and a few accidents are still happening in the house.
We don't know who Damsel's father is but her mom is possibly beagle mix but more hound (see picture below.) Her mom has a lovely, friendly disposition and has been a wonderful mother to her puppies even though they were all abandoned. Damsel was the smallest of the litter but she definitely held her own amongst her siblings. Based on the weight of all of the puppies at this age, it would seem they will all be on the smaller side - especially Damsel.
